Water Hardness
- Tap water consists of many minerals and salt ( hard water )
- Distilled water consists of no minerals ( soft water )
Important to make sure aquatic animals can maintain stability in the hardness of water.
pH Levels
- Lower the pH number, the higher the acidity.
- Higher the pH number, the lower the acidity.
Different fish maintain stability in different pH water. Know which area your fish is most comfortable in living.
Adhesion and Cohesion
- Adhesion is when water sticks to glass.
- Cohesion is when water sticks to water.
Therefor bodies of water will stick together unless acted upon by an outside force.
Density
Water is more dense then oil.
When there are oil spills in the ocean, the oil is less dense so it remains at the surface of the water. Although oil spills are bad for the ocean, at least it stays on top of the water, instead of mixing into the water.
Conductivity
More minerals, higher conductivity.
Sewage has large conductivity which is very harmful to the marine organisms.
Buoyancy
The ability of objects to either sink or float.
Eggs float in salt water, and sink in distilled and tap water.
Water Cycle
The way water travels, and how fish adapt to the changes.
Ground water turns into evaporation, then condenses in the clouds where it then becomes cold. As it gets heavier it participates as rain and then returns to the ground as run off. Important to realize the way in which water moves in our atmosphere.
Solvents and Sollutes
Solvents are whats doing the dissolving.
Sollutes are what is being dissolved.
Soil- does not dissolve when mixed with water.
Baking power and salt do dissolve when mixed with water.
Mixture Solution and Suspension
When filtering mixed water and sand, sand remains in the filter.
When filtering mixed water and salt, both travel through the filter.
Specific Heat
Balloon with air pops immediately, where as a balloon with water does not.
Air expands and pops the balloon, and because water absorbs heat the water balloon will take and extremely longer time to pop. Specific heat prevents rapid water change in the ocean and different bodies of water.
Density and Temperature
Less dense water has a higher temperature and then travels to the top. Also in the ocean the hotter the water the higher up you can find it. As you travel deeper into the ocean and certain bodies of water, the colder it gets.
